From The Umpire's Rule Book

Here is where we will be featuring some of the commonly confused rules.

1. Safety bag (or Orange bag): This bag is only in play when running to first. When a batter hits the ball and runs to first base the batter-runner must run to the orange bag if there is a play at first. The fielder must take the white bag when making a play at first. There is one exception: when a play is being made from foul territory on the first base side of the diamond the fielder has the choice to take the orange or white bag. Whichever base the fielder takes, the runner must run to the opposite. Now for the part that I see a lot of but rarely have to make a call on. When the runner has achieved first base, the orange bag "disappears". In other words, when you lead off and come back to first, if you are only touching the orange base, you can be tagged out
